Sep 06, 2011 - Jazz Hall of Fame reveals Fall Series lineup


We are excited to announce the lineup for the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame’s Autumn Series!  From September through December, the Depot will host a talented performer or group every Sunday evening. The Autumn Series features locally and nationally acclaimed artists, bringing you the best jazz in Oklahoma!

September 1-4  JazzFest with Eldar Jazz
The Autumn Series begins with a full weekend of music! The festival includes performances by Pam Van Dyke Crosby and piano phenom Eldar Djangirov with his trio, as well as a concert by Booker T. Washington alumni.

September 11  Sonny Gray with vocalist Dionne White
Dionne White and Jazz Hall inductee Sonny Gray are both Tulsa jazz icons. This dynamic duo performs a variety of classic piano and vocal tunes at the Jazz Depot.
September 18  Dean DeMerritt Jazz Tribe
With roots in jazz, blues, classical, rock, and country music, Atlanta bassist Dean DeMerritt has performed with greats like Stanley Clarke, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Billy Cobham, Max Roach, and Stan Kenton. The Dean DeMerritt Jazz Tribe plays original tunes as well as post-bop and funk classics.
September 25  Vocalist Annie Ellicott
A talented and creative songstress, Jazz Hall of Fame Legacy Award recipient Annie Ellicott sings and scats both classic and modern/progressive jazz. She has worked with Tulsa band BEN.BEN. and the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, and now performs with her own band in Kansas City.
October 2  Dr. Tommy Poole’s NSU Jazz Ensemble with pianist Geoffrey Keezer
Dr. Tommy Poole is director of Jazz Studies and assistant professor of music at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. He performs with Grammy-nominated pianist Geoffrey Keezer, formerly of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. 
October 9  Mike Cameron Quartet with vocalist Krisheena Kimbrew
The Mike Cameron Quartet (Cameron on sax, Ed Garcia on bass, Scott McQuade on piano, and Jared Johnson on drums) has recently released their debut album. Cameron makes his second appearance at the Jazz Depot alongside NSU singer Krisheena Kimbrew.
October 16  TU Jazz Ensembles featuring Tim Ries
The University of Tulsa Jazz Ensembles perform at the Jazz Depot with a special guest artist – saxophonist Tim Ries, a composer/arranger who has performed for former president Bill Clinton and toured with the Rolling Stones. The TU band will play from Ries’ “Rolling Stones Project.”
October 23  Vocalist Thea Hill
Veteran vocalist Thea Hill has performed throughout the country, from Las Vegas to New York. Audiences will remember her performance at the Cole Porter revue; this performance is her first one-woman show at the Depot. 
October 30  Layla Angulo with the Mezclave Latin Jazz Group
Salsa and Latin jazz saxophonist and singer Layla Angulo has had a successful musical career in the US and Europe. She has released two Latin jazz CDs, and performs with Tito Puente Jr. in New York City.  The Mezclave Latin Jazz Group, headed by bassist Ed Garcia Jr., is a local jazz staple.
November 6  Pianist Donald Ryan
Jazz Hall inductee Donald Ryan has played at venues from Carnegie Hall to Vegas’ Wayne Newton Theater, and with musicians such as Franco Autori, Henry Mancini, Andrea Baker, and Steve Wilkerson. He is currently a member of the keyboard faculty at Oral Roberts University.
November 13  TU Jazz Ensembles
The University of Tulsa Jazz Ensembles return to the Depot for their fall semester concert. Enjoy the music of TU’s talented jazz students, under the direction of Professor Vernon Howard.
November 20  An Evening with Janet Rutland
Janet Rutland has performed in Tulsa in a variety of genres – not only vintage pop and jazz, but also in country music and in theater. Rutland is back at the Depot, singing popular tunes from the Great American Songbook.
November 27  Vocalist Darell Christopher’s Jazz and Blues Show
After years of touring Europe, native Tulsan Darell Christopher now resides once again in Tulsa as a proprietor of the Kennedy Mansion. This veteran vocalist sings a rollicking jazz show at the Depot.
December 4  Vocalists Missy Allen and Cynthia Simmons
Cynthia Simmons has impressed audiences with her powerful vocals as a guest artist with Dr. Tommy Poole. Missy Allen sings the compositions of Billie Holiday, Nancy Wilson, and other famed ladies of jazz. These two singers collaborate, with the Scott McQuade Trio and Pat Murray, for what promises to be an exciting evening of jazz. 
December 11  Jeff Shadley’s Jazz Holiday Concert
Trumpeter and vocalist Jeff Shadley has played alongside an extensive list of musicians, including Ted Moses, Flash Terry, Ellis Marsalis, David Sanborn and Earl Clark.  Shadley’s jazz holiday concert promises to warm you up when it’s cold outside.
December 18  Gospel Holiday Extravaganza with Dr. Joey Crutcher
To conclude our Autumn Series, Jazz Hall gospel inductee Dr.Joey Crutcher brings the Gospel Workshop Choir of America to the Jazz Depot for their annual holiday concert. This performance will be filled with favorite holiday tunes and special gospel numbers.
